Ideas for the NFL

I know there is as much of a chance of this happening as there is of Tom Brady scoring a TD on a punt return, but I thought the idea was good.

In the English Premier League, there are 20 teams. Obviously, the team that finishes first wins the title. The three teams that finish last are relegated to the second division. In the NFL, we always have teams that just can't seem to win from year to year, teams like the Lions and the Browns. Teams such as the New England Patriots and the Indianapolis Colts have dominated the NFL in recent years, and I think the NFL needs a change in structure.

LEAGUE STRUCTURE
- 24 teams in the NFL
-16 game season
-Super Bowl
-Two worst teams from each conference relegated (four teams relegated total)

- 8 teams in a league called R-League (Rebuilding League)
-Each team plays each other twice
-Top four teams get promoted to the NFL

DRAFT
-Draft would start with the eight teams in the R-League, followed by the teams in the NFL
-Rookie contracts are handed out using a scale
-All rookie contracts are all six years
-If the team that they were drafted on does not gain promotion by the fourth year, he may opt out into free agency (described below)
-If drafted player fails to sign with the team that drafted him by the first game of the season, said player must re-enter the draft the next year

FREE AGENCY
-Players entering free agency may join the team of their choice
-Each player is labeled Type A, B, C, D or none
-According to the order of the draft, each team may only offer Type A free agents a certain amount, Type B free agents a certain amount, etc.
-More on the last rule: The team that finishes with the NFL's best record can offer Type A free agents less than the team with the worst record in the R-League
-Teams may only sign 1 Type A free agent, 3 Type B free agents, 4 Type C free agents, 5 Type D free agents, and unlimited "none" free agents

  1. I think your idea is interesting. It's interesting how the same teams are at the top - Patriots, Colts and Steelers, so maybe they ought to rid themselves of poorly performing ones.

But how do you account for those team that came out of nowhere and had incredible turnarounds? Teams like the 2001 Patriots, 1999 Colts, 2008 Dolphins or 2006 Saints.

There is parity in the NFL unlike like the Premier League in terms of revenue sharing, salary caps and draft picks. It's not as if there is a farm league that can account for a personnel building system. The terrible Browns and Lions teams are a result of poor management from top to bottom.

Anyways, I think your idea is well thought out and interesting. Maybe it would work better for basketball.

  2. The patriots are so hot a Brady punt retrun for TD doesn't sound out of the question. I bet you and undrafted 5'7" (maybe) 200 Lb. (maybe) running back/receiver out of chadron state being a very reliable producer sounded outrageous preseason as well.

  3. Not that this has anything to do with anything, but I think the pats will be the first team with a white star running back, receiver, and QB. Woodhead, Welker, Brady. And a white offensive lineman to return a punt.
